Fitting and checking periodic data
Use tables, fitted equations and residual plots to judge whether a sinusoidal model is useful. This precalculus set combines periodic-function parameters with elementary data analysis: estimating a cycle, interpreting regression coefficients, computing observed-minus-predicted errors and checking predictions against measurements.
Single-select and multiselect questions ask you to distinguish a promising fit from a justified conclusion. You will compare squared errors on the same observations, inspect a residual plot, identify systematic vertical bias and examine how widely spaced samples can hide different periods. The problems include exact small data sets and explicitly supplied regression output; no statistical software is required.
Preparation and interpretation
Review amplitude, period and phase shift, together with substitution into a function. Keep the measurement units attached to parameters and residuals. Read a high fit statistic as one piece of evidence rather than a guarantee of future accuracy or a causal explanation. Worked explanations separate what the available data support from what would require additional observations. This practice is intended to build cautious model checking before more advanced regression or time-series study.
