Computing cross products: linear algebra practice
Compute cross products from coordinates and verify the result rather than trusting a memorized sign pattern. Questions build from basis vectors to general integer inputs, orthogonality checks, parameter-dependent inputs and a normal to a plane. The component rule is used directly; no determinant expansion is required at this stage of the course.
What you will practise
- Apply the component rule for the three-dimensional cross product
- Check orientation and orthogonality of computed results
- Use cross products to find normals and diagnose sign errors
How to use this questionset
Prerequisites: Right-hand orientation, vector components, dot products and point-normal plane equations. The questions progress from direct interpretation to application and reasoning. Work out an answer before comparing the choices; for multi-select questions, evaluate every statement independently. Worked explanations show the reasoning and address relevant misconceptions, so an incorrect attempt can guide your next review.
The middle component is especially vulnerable to a sign reversal. A correct result is perpendicular to both inputs, but orthogonality alone does not verify its sign or magnitude. Computed cross products will supply areas, oriented volume and tests for coplanarity. This microlearning belongs to Module 1, Vectors and Geometry, in the Complete Linear Algebra Course.
