📄 Overview & Study Guide

Factoring trigonometric equations

Extend elementary trigonometric equation solving to products and quadratics in sine, cosine and tangent. This practice set combines familiar algebra with the extra checks required for angles: a root of the algebraic substitution must lie in the trigonometric function’s range, and each feasible value may correspond to several angles.

Questions cover the zero-product property, factorization after substitution, repeated factors, tangent families, nonspecial inverse values and a rational expression with an original denominator restriction. Single-select and multiselect tasks also diagnose a common error: dividing by a trigonometric factor and losing the solutions where that factor is zero. Explanations keep the algebraic roots separate from the final angle solutions.

Recommended approach

Review quadratic factoring and elementary trigonometric equations first. Move all terms to one side, factor where possible, solve each factor separately and combine the valid branches. Then apply range restrictions, original denominator restrictions and the requested interval. Count distinct angles only once, even when an algebraic root has multiplicity greater than one. Substitute final candidates into the original equation to check the result.
