Cross Products as Signed-Volume Functionals
Derive and use the three-dimensional cross product through the linear functional defined by a determinant. Work in standard right-handed coordinates, extract components with basis vectors and connect dot products to signed and unsigned volume. The later questions test order, uniqueness and dependence.
What you will practise
- Recover cross-product components from basis-vector determinants.
- Calculate cross products and scalar triple products.
- Use repeated columns to explain orthogonality.
- Distinguish cyclic permutations, swaps and insufficient dot-product information.
Prerequisites and study approach
Useful preparation: Three-dimensional vectors, dot products, determinants and standard orientation. Work through the questions from foundational interpretation to more demanding applications. Both single-select and multiselect items are included; in a multiselect item, judge every statement independently. Try a calculation, sketch or short justification before consulting the explanation.
The worked feedback develops the reasoning and addresses common errors such as losing the middle-component sign, confusing signed volume with ordinary volume or assuming the cross product is associative. Use it to compare your method with the stated assumptions, then revisit any step you could not justify. This microlearning belongs to Module 4, Determinants, Volume and Orientation, in the Complete Linear Algebra Course.
