Solving right triangles and surveying models
Develop right-triangle problem-solving skills for heights, distances, cables, bearings and two-sighting measurements. This precalculus practice set moves from a single unknown angle or side to linked triangles sharing a vertical height. Questions make the reference direction, units and physical assumptions explicit so that selecting the right ratio is part of the reasoning.
Single-select and multiselect tasks cover inverse trigonometry, complementary angles, elevation and depression, observer height and shared-distance constraints. A labelled surveying diagram supports a two-observation problem. Explanations show how to form an equation, retain exact values where practical and round only at the end. Several items ask you to identify a physically impossible or inconsistent measurement rather than blindly enter values into a calculator.
Before and after practice
Review sine, cosine and tangent ratios and calculator degree mode. Sketch each situation, label the horizontal and vertical distances, and check whether the unknown is a sloping length or a ground distance. After solving, test whether a hypotenuse is longest and whether a closer observation should give a larger elevation angle. These habits prepare you for more general triangle applications.
