π Overview & Study Guide
Orientation and the Sign of a Determinant
Study the directional information carried by a determinant. These exercises use ordered basis vectors, reflections, rotations, coordinate permutations and continuous changes of a matrix to connect algebraic signs with orientation in two and three dimensions.
What you will practise
- Identify orientation effects of coordinate reflections.
- Compare planar half-turns with three-dimensional inversion.
- Track the orientation of composed transformations.
- Reason about a sign change along a continuous matrix path.
Prerequisites and study approach
Useful preparation: Area and volume scaling, standard basis vectors and elementary coordinate geometry. Work through the questions from foundational interpretation to more demanding applications. Both single-select and multiselect items are included; in a multiselect item, judge every statement independently. Try a calculation, sketch or short justification before consulting the explanation.
The worked feedback develops the reasoning and addresses common errors such as confusing negative entries with orientation reversal or assigning an invertible orientation class to a collapsed map. Use it to compare your method with the stated assumptions, then revisit any step you could not justify. This microlearning belongs to Module 4, Determinants, Volume and Orientation, in the Complete Linear Algebra Course.
