π Overview & Study Guide
Block and Vandermonde Determinants
Use structure to evaluate determinants with less arithmetic and greater insight. Practice block diagonal and block triangular matrices, then examine Vandermonde matrices built from interpolation nodes. A final extension introduces block elimination when the leading block is invertible.
What you will practise
- Use compatible square blocks and identify relevant zero blocks.
- Evaluate Vandermonde products in a specified row order.
- Relate distinct interpolation nodes to invertibility.
- Check the inverse condition in a Schur-complement calculation.
Prerequisites and study approach
Useful preparation: Triangular determinants, block matrix notation and polynomial powers. Work through the questions from foundational interpretation to more demanding applications. Both single-select and multiselect items are included; in a multiselect item, judge every statement independently. Try a calculation, sketch or short justification before consulting the explanation.
The worked feedback develops the reasoning and addresses common errors such as ignoring node order, requiring nonzero nodes instead of distinct nodes or applying block formulas without their structural conditions. Use it to compare your method with the stated assumptions, then revisit any step you could not justify.
