Point-normal equations: linear algebra practice

Describe lines and planes through orthogonality to a normal vector. The questions connect the compact dot-product equation to Cartesian coefficients, test points and directions, and explain why a normal must be nonzero. Calculations include offset sets so that passing through the origin is never assumed silently.

What you will practise

  • Construct point-normal equations in two or three dimensions
  • Interpret normal vectors and test tangent directions
  • Check equivalent equations and the nonzero-normal requirement

How to use this questionset

Prerequisites: Dot products, orthogonality, coordinate differences and line/plane directions. The questions progress from direct interpretation to application and reasoning. Work out an answer before comparing the choices; for multi-select questions, evaluate every statement independently. Worked explanations show the reasoning and address relevant misconceptions, so an incorrect attempt can guide your next review.

A normal describes a perpendicular direction, not usually a direction along the geometric set. Multiplying a whole equation by a nonzero scalar preserves its solution set. Point-normal equations support representation changes and signed distance formulas. This microlearning belongs to Module 1, Vectors and Geometry, in the Complete Linear Algebra Course.
