Induced length and distance
A specified inner product determines length, distance and angle. This set calculates induced norms and distances, checks scaling and inequalities, and distinguishes geometric changes from algebraic properties of the vector space.
What you will practise
- Compute norms from self-products.
- Measure distances in weighted geometries.
- Use Cauchy–Schwarz and triangle bounds.
- Normalize vectors under the stated inner product.
Begin with recognition and interpretation, then work through calculations, error diagnosis and more demanding reasoning. Single-select and multi-select questions ask you to evaluate the stated assumptions as well as the result. Worked explanations connect the answer to a method or a counterexample, so you can check why tempting alternatives fail.
Before you start
Review real inner-product axioms and Euclidean norms. Keep a written calculation or short justification for each response, especially when several statements can be correct. This microlearning supports consistent geometry in nonstandard inner-product spaces within Module 6 of the Complete Linear Algebra Course.
