π Overview & Study Guide
Differences of squares, cubes and substitution
Develop pattern recognition for special-product factoring without losing the reasoning behind each identity. This precalculus practice set covers differences of squares, sums and differences of cubes, common-factor chains and expressions that become quadratic after substitution.
You will identify repeated algebraic units, restore a substitution carefully and decide whether a factorization is complete over the integers. Questions deliberately distinguish a sum of squares from a difference of squares and a sum of cube volumes from the cube of a sum. A coefficient-system check helps prevent an answer valid over the reals from being mislabelled as an integer factorization.
Before attempting the set
Review quadratic trinomials, common factors and expansion. Use scratch work to multiply proposed factors back to the original expression, and check every statement in select-all items.
Study value
Worked explanations show the cancellation of cross terms and the purpose of each substitution. This set prepares you to simplify rational expressions and recognise algebraic structure; advanced real factorization and equation solving are reserved for later topics.
