Radical equations and extraneous solutions: precalculus practice
Solve radical equations with a deliberate isolate, square and check routine. This practice explains why a correct algebraic calculation can still produce an extraneous candidate and how sign restrictions help detect it.
Tasks include principal square roots, two-radical equations, repeated squaring, sign-based impossibility and a cube-root contrast. Each worked explanation preserves the real domain, identifies any candidate introduced by squaring, and verifies the accepted answer in the equation that was originally asked.
Prerequisites include real radicals, quadratic equations, factoring and valid transformations. Solve on paper before comparing the alternatives, and use the worked explanation to check both the result and the method. Single-select and multiselect questions combine conceptual reasoning, calculation, application and error analysis. In multiselect items, assess each statement independently.
The authored bank progresses from introductory tasks to more demanding combinations and exceptional cases. Questions are self-contained because delivery order may vary. This is focused practice for the foundation stage of the Precalculus: Comprehensive QuizBook; it is not a placement test or a claim of independently demonstrated mastery. Use mistakes to identify which prerequisite or method needs another worked example, then try a fresh problem without the options.
