The Classical Adjugate and Inverse Identity
Construct the classical adjugate carefully and connect it to cofactor expansion, matrix inverses and kernels. Practice small matrices, diagonal structure and singular cases. Later questions explain the product identity and distinguish different rank behaviors of an adjugate.
What you will practise
- Transpose the cofactor matrix with correct index placement.
- Use the adjugate to obtain an existing inverse.
- Interpret adjugate columns for a singular matrix.
- Derive determinant and rank consequences from the cofactor construction.
Prerequisites and study approach
Useful preparation: Minors, cofactors, matrix multiplication, inverses and basic rank. Work through the questions from foundational interpretation to more demanding applications. Both single-select and multiselect items are included; in a multiselect item, judge every statement independently. Try a calculation, sketch or short justification before consulting the explanation.
The worked feedback develops the reasoning and addresses common errors such as forgetting the transpose, dividing by a zero determinant or assuming every singular matrix has a zero adjugate. Use it to compare your method with the stated assumptions, then revisit any step you could not justify.
