Compound interest and effective annual rates
Practise the mathematics of compound interest using explicitly hypothetical rates and account conditions. This precalculus set connects percentage multipliers with compounding frequency, elapsed time and effective annual yield.
Build a discrete compounding expression, distinguish a periodic rate from a nominal annual rate, and count periods correctly when time is given in months. Compare annual and semiannual yields, recover a principal from a future balance, and reconstruct a nominal rate from an effective annual rate. Continuous compounding appears through an inverse-principal problem and a comparison of competing hypothetical models.
Prerequisites are exponent rules, percentages, rearranging formulas and continuous-growth notation. Single-select and multiselect questions develop from interpreting the formula to calculation and justified comparison. Scientific calculators are allowed when stated, and required precision is specified. Use full precision until the final rounding step.
The explanations check units and distinguish total balance from interest earned. Unless a prompt states otherwise, models have no additional deposits, withdrawals, fees or taxes, and rates remain fixed. Annuities and recurring-payment formulas are outside this set; the focus is a single initial principal and clear model assumptions.
